AthensIM

The Athens Identity Manager is a next generation identity management solution that enables organisations to create single sign on systems that work with both local and external resources. It performs attribute based authentication and authorisation allowing administrators to have fine grained control over their users access rights.
AthensIM is a SAML Identity Provider (origin) which incorporates the Shibboleth profile. It is designed to be an easy to install and administer Identity Management solution for use within Shibboleth federations that use the Shibboleth 1.2 protocol.
AthensIM requires an authentication/single sign on system to function. For testing purposes this can be as simple as the basic authentication provided by most web servers.
Eduserv Athens provides an email and telephone support service for the Eduserv Athens Identity Manager. In the first instance contact athensim@eduserv.org.uk.
The Eduserv Athens Identity Manager is distributed in two ways:
- The first option comes with a bundled servlet container, jetty, and is easier to install and configure, although offers less flexibility. It is recommended for users who are less familiar with setting up server environments, users who don't require the functionality of an accompanying web server and users who wish to get started as quickly as possible.
- The second option is a source distribution which is more suitable for installation in a sophisticated production environment with accompanying web server. It is suitable for users who wish to use an authentication method which is dependant on apache or IIS and users who wish to tightly integrate their origin with an existing web service.
The Integration Guide describes the process of integrating the Eduserv Athens Identity Manager (AthensIM) software within an existing IT infrastructure. In addition to configuration information, this document outlines the Shibboleth protocol, describes the features of AthensIM, offers advice on joining federations and explains the ways in which the software can be extended.
