Athens implementations steps

When you have agreed commercial terms, signed the Athens licence and registered as a DSP (see Joining instructions), you will be registered as an Athens site, with associated username and password to give you access to the protected DSP area, where you can download Athens software and tailor your Athens implementation.

You can then discuss your proposed implementation with the Athens technical team, considering such aspects as:

  • Where the Athens 'click here to login' link will be visible. This may be a separate URL, but your normal login page should link to it.
  • Any mapping you will do between Athens institutional codes, available at http://auth.athensams.net/orglist.php, and your own customer database.
  • Any registration that may be necessary for new customers. This should be kept to a minimum.

Athens authentication normally operates in addition to your own authentication systems.

Implementation

  1. Download the DSP Integration Guide and the Athens client software of your choice from the DSP area.
  2. Implement Athens according to the Athens Standards Guide available from the DSP area.
  3. Tailor the Athens login, error and logout (if available) pages to match your site style, using the Athens Authentication Point (AAP) facilities in the DSP area.
  4. Test the Athens implementation against the Basic Validation tests. Your Athens username will allow you to access the general Athens Admin area, where we have set-up user accounts for testing purposes.
  5. Inform Athens DSP Helpdesk that your testing is complete.
  6. Athens will then test your implementation against the Basic Validation tests. Athens can carry out these final tests in a test environment if you wish, but the service will need re-testing against your live service before it can be released. You should allow one day for this activity.
  7. When Athens testing is completed satisfactorily on your live site, Athens will make your service live and your service will appear in the list of Athens resources

Allocation to Sites

When your service is live, you will be able to allocate access to your customers directly via a 'resources' section in the DSP administration area. You will also be able to remove access and customise the emails that advise your customers of the change there. For more information please go the the Allocation to sites page.
